Erosion Control

Inquire about the Rotational Erosion Rate Apparatus (RETA), a testing apparatus which measures the erosional characteristics of rock, highly cemented sands or stiff clays as a function of shear stresses produced from flowing water.

The RETA was developed at the University of Florida by Dr. D. Max Sheppard and our own Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Dr. David Bloomquist. The RETA measures the rate at which rock and other materials erode due to water flow induced shear stress. In the case of rock, core samples are taken from the site and tested in our laboratory using the RETA.

Determine the erosion potential for a variety natural and synthetic materials

RETA – Rock Erosion Testing

This test measures the erosional characteristics of soft rock, highly cemented sands or stiff clays as a function of shear stresses produced from flowing water. While not yet a FM (Florida Method), the test is currently used by FDOT to evaluate the erosion susceptibility of bridge foundations.

Moisture Content

Water content is one of the most significant index properties used in establishing a correlation between soil behavior and its index properties of a material. Adheres to ASTM D2216 standard of testing.

Sieve Analysis

Used to assess the particle size of soil and aggregate, this simple test helps establish soil gradation of the in situ soils. Adheres to ASTM D1140 standard of testing.

Hydrometer Analysis

Used to grade fine-grained soils, silts and clays that are too small for sieve analysis. Adheres to ASTM D422 standard of testing.

Organic Content

Determine the percentage of organic material to assess overall soil suitability. Soils with high organic contents can lead to long-term foundation settlement due to the decay and decomposition of these soils. Adheres to ASTM D2974 standard of testing.

Atterberg Limits

Determine the liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index of fine grained soils, primarily clays, to assess the potential for these soils to shrink and swell as moisture contents change over time. Soils with moderate to highly plasticity indices can have the potential to cause damage to a structures foundation. Adheres to ASTM D4318 standard of testing.
